Durham is regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in the UK.  It is famous for Durham Cathedral and Durham Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that attracts thousands of tourists every year.  In fact, the Cathedral has been voted Britain's favourite building on a number of occasions. It sits in the centre of the city and is surrounded on three sides by the beautiful River Wear.

Although a small city, with a population of only 50,000, Durham has the third oldest university in England (after Oxford and Cambridge) with nearly 18,000 students. The university's students come from all over the world, which has made Durham a lively cosmopolitan city.
