Weekly Lessons


1-to-1 Lessons

Payment can be made with a bank transfer (we will provide you with our banking details), online using Paypal (we will send an invoice to your email adrress so that you can pay by card), by cheque (made out to Durham School of English) or by cash.

All lesson materials are included in the price, and there is no administration fee.

Students can stop having classes at any time.  If classes have been paid for in advance, the school will refund the remaining classes in full.

If a teacher, for any reason, has to stop teaching mid-course, Durham School of English will endeavour to replace the teacher as soon as possible, subject to availability, in order to minimise disruption to the student’s progress.

We strive to provide the best possible exam preparation.  However, we will not be held responsible or accountable if a student does not pass the CAE exam or achieve their desired IELTS band.

We do not give the IELTS and CAE exams. The exams need to be taken at officially recognised exam centres.
One-to-one class provision is dependent upon the availability of a suitable teacher.

ESOL Weekly Group Lessons

Students should make one payment for all the lessons in the term.  The payment should be made on or before the first class of the month.

Missed lessons are not refunded.  It may not always be possible, but you are welcome to join a different group class (at your level) if you are absent due to illness.

English Arch: Skype Matching Service

You must be over 18 years of age to use Durham School of English’s Skype matching service.

Although we make every effort to match users, we cannot guarantee that a match will be found.  Some users may not be matched.

The following details are made available to the person you are matched with:
•Your gender
•Your English Level
•Your Skype ID
•Your Email Address

As a user of Durham School of English’s Skype Buddies, you have a responsibility to treat other members with respect and courtesy and not to engage in any inappropriate behaviour that is of a sexual or threatening nature.

Do not provide personal details to people you communicate with through Durham School of English’s Skype Buddies.  We do not vet our users so cannot vouch for any user’s character.

We cannot guarantee that you will be matched with someone of the same sex or English level.  Incorrect matches may be made due to the submittal of erroneous information or human error on our part.

Although we make every effort to match people correctly across time zones, due to the possibility of human error on our part, we cannot guarantee that the time you are given for your meeting will coincide with the time given to your partner.

Durham School of English cannot guarantee that the person you are matched with will attend the meeting we arrange.

Intensive and Semi-Intensive Courses

General

All courses begin on Monday.  Intensive courses finish on Saturday.  Semi-intensive courses finish on Friday.

All courses must be booked in advance.

The school sometimes takes photos and videos to use in marketing.  By booking a course, you agree to your image being used in this way.   If you would prefer that we didn't use your image, you should inform us before your course begins.


Bookings

Durham school of English only takes bookings through its website.  Fill in the form on the enrolment page.

If you are happy to proceed, please pay a deposit of £100. This will hold your place on the course.

Four weeks before the course starts, pay the remaining course fees.   

If you would like to pay by bank transfer, we will send you our account details.  Please include your name as a reference when you transfer the money so that we know who the money has come from.  You should also send a copy of your bank transfer receipt  by email as proof of payment.

The school will be closed during Public and Bank holidays.  A discount is given for courses which include these days: intensive course £50 day, semi-intensive courses £30 day.

All payments should be in pound sterling (£) unless agreed otherwise.


We have tried to make these Terms and Conditions as easy to understand as possible.  However, if you are unclear about something, please contact us.
 
Accommodation

Homestay places are arranged by Durham School of English, and are subject to availability.  They cannot be guaranteed.

Homestay payments should be paid to the school when course payments are made.

Students may be able to walk to school, or may need to take a bus.

Homestay accommodation is usually booked from Sunday to Sunday. 

The homestay will provide bedding and towels for you to use.  They will also provide you with a house key.

If you leave the homestay before the end of your course, you must give the school and your host one week's notice. 

Hotel bookings should be made by the student.



Insurance

We strongly recommend that students take out insurance cover.  This insurance should cover cancellation and curtailment, course fees, medical expenses, personal belongings, money, personal liability and personal injury.

Force Majeure

The school may need to cancel classes for reasons beyond its control:  an Act of God (fire, flood, earthquake, storm, infectious diseases), war, threat of war, terrorist activities, labour dispute, strike or failure of electricity / heating.  If it is necessary to cancel or change classes, we will inform the student as soon as possible and offer alternative arrangements.  If this is not possible, the student is entitled to a full refund for outstanding classes and accommodation.

Social Programme

It may be necessary to change social programme trips.  These can be made without obligation or liability.  If changes are made, we will inform the student as soon as possible and try and find suitable alternatives.

Students do not need to join the weekend or afternoon trips. 
Cancellation

If you want to cancel your course, this must be done in writing by email.

The deposit will not be refunded at any time.

The remaining course and accommodation fees are refundable if the cancelation is made more than one week before the course starts.

If a booking is cancelled within one week of the course starting,  one week’s tuition is payable.

If you decide to leave the course after it has started, we will not normally refund any fees.  Any refunds are at the discretion of the director.


Online Courses

If you are late for a class, your teacher will wait for 15 minutes.  If you have not joined after 15 minutes, you will lose the lesson.  Lessons lost in this way cannot be rescheduled.  Late starting classses will still finish at the scheduled finish time.

All the materials are included in the prices.

Your teacher will only correct 400 words of writing per hour of teaching.  The written work will be set by your teacher and may include IELTS tasks, stories, grammar exercises, dialogues etc.

We don't give refunds once a block payment has been made.  If something prevents you from having your lessons, for example becoming ill, we will do our best to reschedule them.

We reserve the right to refuse service at any time.  Outstanding lessons will be refunded.

Under certain circumstances, for example illness, it may not be possible for your teacher to give a lesson.  If this happens, your teacher will email you as soon as possible and reschedule your lesson.  If a suitable time cannot be agreed on, the lesson fee will be refunded.
