One-to-One English Lessons

One-to-one lessons are perhaps the fastest way to improve, as we can tailor our teaching to your individual needs and learning style.

General English
Students typically choose to follow a course which combines topic-based learning with every- day English.  During the lessons, priority is given to speaking and listening activities, with particular attention paid to language patterns and vocabulary.  In order to reinforce the work done in class, supplementary reading and writing exercises are set as homework.

These classes can be shared with friends and family members if all the students have a similar level of English.  The cost of the class can be divided by the total number of students in the class.

IELTS Preparation

Our exam preparation lessons combine language development with thorough exam preparation and practice.

We'll work through previous tests with you, giving you guidance on how to answer the questions and outlining tips, strategies and techniques that you can use to improve your score.

Working on  your test skills by going through previous tests will improve your test score and may in itself be sufficient for you to get the IELTS band that you need.  However, if you are further from your goal, you will also need to improve your general English level.  Our exam preparation lessons will help you do this.

CAE Preparation

Our CAE preparation lessons are tailored to your particular needs. If you have no experience of the CAE exam, we will work through previous exam papers with you so that you understand how to approach each of the exam’s 5 parts.  If you more familiar with the exam, class time is usually given to the speaking, writing and Use of English parts of the exam, with reading and listening exercises given as homework.

The classes themselves are topic based, and have the aim of developing the vocabulary and  language skills that you will need.  Attention is also given to identifying and practicing any weaknesses you might have.

Durham School of English was recommended to me by my university supervisor. Whilst studying at the masters level in a teacher training course (PGCE), I needed my advanced English skills to be brought onto a higher level. As a teacher myself, I appreciate the complexity of the task in this case. I had four hours per week, two one to one lessons, for two months. My teacher went through my written work and listened to me speaking. He identified common mistakes and guided me through better practices. My supervisors were happy with the improvements in my writing style. I feel much more confident using English in a fast paced classroom, where, as a teacher, I must demonstrate impeccable use of language. I do not hesitate in recommending Durham School of English to anyone who would like to improve their academic writing and speaking.
